Get Rid of Hiccups: Sip & Suffocate

1. Get a Big Glass or Bottle of Water Ready.

2. Take the Biggest Breath You Can & Hold It.

You want to impede respiration, i.e. temporarily suffocate the hiccups.

3. SIP As Much Water As You Can.

Let the water slowly coat your dried-out, irritated esophagus while you hold your breath.  Keep sipping until you have to gasp for air.

4. Repeat If This Doesn't Work the 1st Time.

Sipping water while suffocating temporarily usually works the first time.  I've taught this technique to many people in the last several decades. In only about 1% of the cases has anyone had to do it three times.  Nobody has walked away still hiccupping.

Seeing is believing.   The video on this page shows how effective different types of face masks are in obstruction droplets using  flow visualization of emulated coughs and sneezes.

It's easy to make a mask out of things you have at home.  All you need is a piece of cloth and two rubber bands.  You can use elastic hair bands, too.  For cloth there are bandanas, small kitchen towels, a piece of a t-shirt, etc.

The best video to teach washing hands to make them hands safe.  Not language dependent and children can understand the demonstration, too.

"I taught my Grade 3 students to wash hands assembly line style when returning to class.  After the first two got cleaned up, one squirt soap and the other doled out paper towels." -- V. Ott
