Improving public education in Hawaiʻi starts with improving the one and only state-run Board of Education. That will happen only when true community engagement becomes standard practice. We have many hurdles to overcome before this vision becomes reality. Let's work together to make our dreams come true.
What is Process for Applying to Hawaiʻi Board of Education?
How the State of Hawaiʻi Boards and Commissions (B&C) operates is a bit of a mystery. In September 2026, Board member Sylvia Lee resigned from the Hawaiʻi Board of Education. However, the vacancy hasn't appeared on the B&C website, and of the 173 Boards and Commissions listed for application, the Board of Education isn't one of them. Hopefully, this Uniform Information Practices Act (UIPA) request, the Hawaiʻi equivalent of a FOIA request (Freedom of Information Act), will generate some useful information about how applying for the State Board of Education is supposed to work. Stay tuned.
